Get a rental agent
Review the rental contracts carefully and be sure you totally understand the fine prints
Make photos yourself during inspections and be sure to keep those photos for when you’re leaving
Be careful of cooking. The typical Nigerian cooking does not really help
Be careful of verbal agreements. They are binding in NL
You may need a Dutch friend to help you interpret contracts because translator software and/or apps may not always fully get the context of the agreements
Also check for the following information:
- Insulation/energy label.
- Type of contract
- Gas / Electric heating
- If you can make modifications to the house and what types you’re allowed to make.
- Also ask what’s the procedure for renting the house. Some agents expect you to bid
- Also confirm from the agent if the house owner has any expectations (for instance, they might want to rent out for a specific duration then sell the house).
